Lorna speaks about becoming an SGRA Councillor

“For me its about being there for the residents”

My name is Councillor Lorna M. Cross. I have been a Councillor for many years and I am also a local Justice of the Peace. I retired from the NHS nine years ago.

I have been a Resident of Swanscombe for forty four years. Before I became a Councillor, I was busy with my family and bringing up my two daughters. I was also involved in organising various groups and activities at work. At that time, I had no interest in becoming a Councillor or joining any political group.

Then everything changed around me. A friend of mine introduced me to the Swanscombe and Greenhithe Residents’ Association and their work in and for the community. I became hooked.

Being the first person of ethnic origin in the Council and as an SGRA Councillor, I felt privileged and still do.
I am urging people of whatever background to come along and see what you have to offer to your community.

Every little helps and everyone has a part to play and something to give. For me, I enjoy trying to help everyone. Sometimes, it takes a long time to see results but I persist. I don’t get paid for what I do. I am sure that the fact that we don’t get a salary put many people off from becoming a Parish Councillor.

I love where I live. I am doing it for my community. SO PLEASE COME and JOIN ME and help MAKE A DIFFERENCE. If you care about our community then the SGRA cannot wait to welcome you!
